Star Trek Universe Loses Majel Barrett Roddenberry

Star Trek Universe Loses Majel Barrett Roddenberry
Entertainment News

In a more enlightened age, Majel Barrett Roddenberry might have rated a Federation command. As it was, she helped rule the Star Trek universe.
Roddenberry, the actress whose best-known role was the wife and, later, widow of Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, died today at her Bel Air, Calif., home, Roddenberry.com said. The reported cause of death was leukemia.
Billed through much of her acting career as Majel Barrett, the dark-haired Roddenberry played Dr. McCoy's blonde, beehived assistant, Nurse Chapel, on the original 1966-69 Trek series. She also supplied the voice of the USS Enterprise's computer—a service she continued to provide through the franchise's various offshoots, including J.J. Abrams' upcoming big-screen reboot, Star Trek.

As prominent as those roles were, Roddenberry very nearly played a much larger one.

In the original Trek pilot, shot in 1964, Roddenberry was Number One, the Enterprise's No. 1-ranking officer after its then-captain, Christopher Pike (played by Jeffrey Hunter). Number One was smart, competent, and just so happened to be a woman, not to mention a brunette. The network executives at NBC balked—truth be told, they weren't big fans of the weird-looking guy with the pointy ears, either.

To get his show on the air, Gene Roddenberry consented to lose Number One. But he kept the actress on as Nurse Chapel, albeit a much lower-profile role, and married her portrayer in December 1969. In a final twist to the suits, he gave Number One's old job to the weird-looking guy with the pointy ears, Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy).

Majel Barrett Roddenberry reprised Nurse Chapel for brief appearances in 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture and 1986's Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. She played the recurring role of Counselor Deanna Troi's mother on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Gene Roddenberry died in 1991 at the age of 70.

After his passing, Majel Barrett Roddenberry helped bring alive one of his pet projects in the form of the 1997-2002 series Earth: Final Conflict but said she had nothing to do with running the at-times-flailing Trek ship.
"Gene sold out all of his rights to Star Trek way back 15, almost 20 years ago," she told SciFiDimensions.com in 2000. "So, they ask nothing. I volunteer nothing. They invite me to a few of their shindigs. I'll bet you I haven't been on that lot in two years."

Still, Roddenberry welcomed the recent digital remastering of the original series and Abrams' theatrical take, seeing them as validations of her husband's legacy.

"What's nice is you know a Star Trek movie is still one that everybody wants," she told The Hollywood Reporter in 2006.

In a statement today on Roddenberry.com, her son, Eugene Roddenberry Jr., said his mother appreciated the role fans played in keeping the Trek franchise running for 40-plus years.

"It was her love for the fans, and their love in return," he said, "that kept her going for so long after my father passed away."

Carpet Mayhem

We're ripping up the carpet in the library. Not easy work. It was thrashed when we moved in. Fortunately we found vinyl underneath. Not the greatest color or pattern but better than the carpet.

A drinking horn is raised to Sig-Fred, Vampyre Mike and Wulf. Now Wulf can drink without worry, Fred and be the amazing fantastic Viking he always was and Vampyre Mike won't mind playing Zombies For Jesus over and over. We missed them more than words can say at Ravenwood this weekend.

Animal Quiz

You're a Tiger!

You've really earned your stripes. People like to sing about your
eyes, which some find to be thrilling. You're rather fond of Detroit, as well as
half the universities and high schools all across America. When people want to calm
you down a bit, they use the word "easy". Overall, you're grrrrreat!

Smoke Everywhere

We've got a lot of wildfires throughout the state right now and several in the mountains where we are. The smoke is thick enough to make it a hazy day, like a cloudy winter day. We've got the windows shut and are trying to breath. I woke up with a bloody nose yesterday. First time in a very long while.

Hot, smoky and can't breathe. Yeah, it's a black flag day.

Aren't organizations forbiden on Y/A? What is "JPA"?

More special treatment for the Special Ones?
Galahad

# # #

Tangerine Jello: I believe it is the Jewish Pagan Alliance

It is nothing like special treatment - rather I believe it is a union in which JPA folks clarify beliefs, and correct any erroneous information that is posted about jews and pagans (and we know there is a lot of misinformation about each group, so it is definitely needed -- I think it is a great idea, personally)

# # #

Ode to the Damned: The JPA is the Jewish Pagan Alliance.

# # #

Lady Lazarus: Yes, lots of special treatment. They get cake and they won't share with you, because you're a negative Nancy.

# # #

Emmy Redux: How are they getting special treatment...? Do they get more imaginary funding from Y!A than other groups?

# # #

Kallan: lol organizations???
Yes, we're really special. We know how to educate others about our beliefs.. we get really "special treatment" by people who don't like us.

# # #

T Rex: Yeah, they get double points for everything....

Jealous?

# # #

Fallen Angel: You really didnt think very hard before posting this did you?
You do realize that folks are gonna make fun of you right?
jsut checking sweety

# # #

Aingeal: It's just a bunch of people who star questions (like this one) to clear up misconceptions and other things about both Jews and Pagans, allowing them to defend themselves and answer properly if they are being misrepresented.

We get no funding, and it's just a simple network of people in contact groups (You are encouraged by Yahoo to have contacts).

# # #

Frau Hunter: answer: The JPA isn't an organization, it's a loose alliance of contacts - which Yahoo set up with everyone. That's why people have contacts.

We alert each other to questions others might want to catch. We strive to correct misconceptions about Judaism and pagan religions, to get out truthful information about our respective religions and to spread tolerance.

Unless you consider picking up stalkers, having people block us just because of who we have as contacts, and having people spreading lies about us - special treatment, I don't think we're getting special treatment.

We aren't an organization although a few of us would like to meet, we think we would be friends in real life too.

That's such a crime, isn't it?

# # #

Baron Von : answer: ... "special treatment"? Wow... you know people report others nowadays just for having "JPA" in their nickname. I would hardly call that special treatment.

The purpose of the JPA is to support people of Jewish and pagan faiths who are often discriminated against on R&S, by informing those who show ignorance of the religions and thus creating better understanding. We're all contacts and we star questions which we think other JPA people should have a look at.

# # #

Shadow: if that is what you consider an organization, can me and my friends who chat be called that? and if we talk about religious ideas can we get tax free things like christian churches do? that'd be so cool. thanks for the idea!

(personally i really think some should get a life instead of asking questions like this... but that's just me)

# # #

Paperback: Yep, I totally agree - Pagans ARE pretty special.

Which is why some of us are so happy to be helping them dispel all the mad ideas about their beliefs and traditions, here in this forum.

Stan Winston 1946 - 2008

Kinda grieving today. Stan was my all time favorite creature effects guy (Rob Bottin is a close second). When I saw Jurassic Park in the theater, it was amazing. You believed the dinos were real. You knew the Terminator wouldn’t stop and cheered when Ripley yelled at the mother alien and challenged her.

He will be missed.

Stan Winston, 1946 – 2008

Date of Birth

Today in church wasn’t too bad. I managed NOT to hit Joe when he started going on about gay marriage and how sinful it is. When it came time for communion, I palmed the bread cube and faked drinking the grape juice, pouring it into my water bottle. I just think it would be disrespectful of the religion and my cousin if I partook of communion and I’m not a Christian (even if he thinks I am).

The concert last night was good. The first band was kinda sappy. Okay, really sappy. The second one rocked the place. Then came the “message.” You end up “paying” for a free Christian concert, that’s for sure. Almost an hour of preaching and I was hurting by then so it was really hard to sit through that and the altar call.

I jumped at a chance to go with one of the moms from our group and an older couple to get some cds. The older Spanish couple surprised me, they knew the bands and loved the hard stuff. The other mom I figured would, she and I talked the same language: Alice Cooper, Dokken, Queensryche, etc.

I got 2 cds of the band I liked. I burned off two copies for one of the kids that was with us last night and made him promise to buy the cds when he can. He and his sister didn’t have enough money last night. I know what that’s like.

Chris was home from college today. He’s growing in some ways and not in others, like picking up after himself. I guess all young adults go through that unless they’re in the military.

David, Serena and Nick leave early in the morning for their conference. Not sure when Chris will leave but it’ll be sometime tomorrow. That leaves me and the dogs to ourselves this week until Friday. That’ll be good. Mom says she’s doing okay at home and has decided not to try and paint the bathroom while I’m gone. That’s a relief.

Still struggling to get into the writing again. Hoping the time here might jump start my creative streak again.

Barstow - Saturday

Today we're going to a Christian rock concert. I'm so excited! Okay, not really but it's good to spend time with the family. The back hurts a bit more because of the chairs here. I can't really spread out until they're gone, of course.

Upside to being here: less stress, less housework, DSL
downside: more back pain, more errand running, keeping a low profile religiously, putting my Hammer in my shirt, not enough time to be online yet.

Stress Alert

So, just when things look up a TINY bit, a monkey wrench gets thrown in the mix. Patches developed a mouth sore that spread badly until she couldn't eat soft food. We took her to the vet and it'll be between $500-$1,000 to help her and she'll lose most of her teeth. Terrific.

So, things will be tight for awhile. Not stress I need.

Rough Day

It was a good but rough day yesterday.

Did some yard work in the early morning. That hurt like hell.

Then I drove Jackie to Fresno to finalize the deal with her new apartment, saw the apartment and measure it. We went and got some odds and ends to start her off - brooms, locks, etc. Lunch. More errands - trying to find a child gate that Mom can use on her door to keep the puppy in at night.

That took forever and 3 stores.

Then driving home - by 6pm I was hurting bad.

Jackie is getting excited about the apartment - that's a good thing.
